2026 May 30-31: Lake Mills WI

We left Chester Woods Saturday morning for a leisurely drive to Jefferson County Fairgrounds in Wisconsin.

The drive was mostly through rolling plains, but there was some more terrain as we approached the Minnesota/Wisconsin border. Crossing the Mississippi River was picturesque (near La Crosse, WI) because the Mississippi River was broad and many islands split the river.

The Jefferson County Fairgrounds was a good place for camping and even better for going to other places. There was another camper next to us, otherwise we were in an empty field. But the ground was level and we had water and electricity hook-ups. What more did we need?

Our plan was to spend as much time as possible with Greg and Barb in Lake Mills. We took Lexie to a Rover.com house, but we overshot Lake Mills by 15 minutes to drop her off. The weather was mild enough that we left her in the RV on Sunday.

Greg and Barb were great hosts, and they certainly know how to spoil their guests. Their house is huge (ginormous to someone who has been living in an RV for two months) and very comfortable, with a great view of Rock Lake. We talked and ate dinner (awesome tenderloin) and talked.

Later in the evening we went to Tyranena Beer Garden to listen to music and see peoples (I think Greg and Barb know all 6,200 people in Lake Mills). Haley and Aiden joined us, along with their dog Franklin. Lexie was with us by this time, but she was not a fan of the music. So she found comfort in the Mini Cooper in the parking lot across the street.

listening to music with Haley et al – great to see Haley and meet Aiden. The most delicious root beer Vicki ever had.

On Sunday Vicki and Steve joined Greg and Barb for breakfast (brunch). Greg made breakfast: eggs with leftover tenderloin.

After brunch we went on the Jolly Mon (25 years old!) for a slow cruise around the lake.

And after that there was some kayaking to Stone Beach. This kayaking was much more enjoyable than paddling a raft into the wind.

We finished the day with nachos at the Sunshine Brewing Company.

Steve and Greg took a four mile hike on Monday morning on the Glacial Drumlin State Trail. This was a great hike with great conversation. Yes, ears may have been burning as we talked about our siblings. The result of the conversation: we will keep our brothers and sisters.

V: Thank you, Greg and Barb for such a special time with both of you. We love your town of Lake Mills and see why it’s so special to both of you. The family bunkroom in your home should be featured in a home design magazine – very cool. We love you two!
