  • July 14-15 2025: A rough and delayed start to travels to SML

The plan was simple: travel 120 miles to Cambridge, OH on Monday night before going to Pipestem Resort in West Virginia for four days. Before going to the Galecki Smith Mountain Lake gathering.

Reality was different. Vicki and Steven were finishing packing their Winne when a rain storm dropped buckets of water onto the Winnie. Unfortunately the awning was extended and was not tilted. So water pooled on the awning until the awning collapsed. We had experienced water pooling before and always managed to retract the awning before any damage occurred. But our minds weren’t on the awning during the downpour. So the awning collapsed and one of the retracting arms was damaged.

We called a few mobile RV technicians, and Blue Mobile was able to come over on Tuesday, the next day. Ron was able to re-attach the awning to the arm and retracted the awning. While we can travel with the RV, the arm will need to be replaced before we can use the awning again. But we were able to get onto the road Tuesday afternoon, 24 hours late.

We had planned to stay at Silver Springs Campground on Monday night. Due to the awning, we arrived a day later. They were kind enough to apply my Monday night fees to staying Tuesday night.

Silver Springs was a middling campground. The sites were close to each other (something that I see in many private campgrounds) but we did get a tree! Vicki was disappointed that the pool was closed when we got there (after 6pm). And the dumpsters were overflowing. But the water and electricity were working, the ground was solid, and Lexie and Steve had some good hiking. The hikers walked around the campground (which was huge) on Tuesday, and Wednesday morning we hiked along a ‘trail’ that was shown on the campground map. This trail turned out to be a driveway to a house (summer cottage) up on the hill.

We didn’t take many pictures as we were only traveling.
