  • July 16 to 19 2025: Pipestem Resort, W VA state park

There was a long and winding and hilly road to Pipestem. Steve travels slower than the speed limit in the RV, so every now and then he pulls over to let the traffic behind him pass.

We arrived at Pipestem and set up the RV in a shaded area. We are beginning to appreciate the advantages of trees around the RV.

We stayed at Pipestem for three nights and never left the campground. Steven took Lexi on some short walks, and took a couple longer hikes himself. One hike involved going to the Indian Branch falls by the County Line Trail, and the falls were not really visible from the hiking trail.

The other hike involved going to the top of the Bolar Observation tower and getting a great view of the area around us.

Vicki and Steve explored the resort grounds, which included McKeever Lodge. The resort was opened by the state of West Virginia in the 1970’s and the lodge overlooks the Bluestone River and its valley.

The lodge includes a swimming pool, which was closed when Vicki went because of lightning. But the restaurant in the lodge had family friendly pricing and the best food I have had in West Virginia (that is a low bar, most of the food I have had in WV has been from fast food chains.)

After our dinner we listened to a country singer/guitar player that was quite good. We had planned to go the the Shakespeare in the Park instead but our dinner went a little long. So we enjoyed live music and some interesting liquor choices from the bar.

We did have a campfire one night that included Vicki’s guitar playing. Vicki sang/played some old camp songs. One of the neighbors later told us how much they enjoyed listening to the music, especially ‘On Top of Spaghetti’.
